Module 3
Primary Pollutants: direct product of combustion or evaporation
Secondary Pollutants: product of interaction between primary pollutants and the atmosphere / sunlight
Pollution sources:
- Point Sources: e.g. smokestacks
- Fugitive Sources: open areas exposed to wind action
- Area sources: well defined areas within which there are several sources of air pollutants
- Mobile Sources: move from place to place while emitting pollutants
Sources of SO2 (causes acid rain): fuel combustion
Sources of NOX (green house gas & acid rain): fuel combustion
Sources of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC): benzene, methylene chloride, released by industrial processes and transportation
