Primary Pollutants: direct product of combustion or evaporation

Secondary Pollutants: product of interaction between primary pollutants and the atmosphere / sunlight

Pollution sources:

  • Point Sources: e.g. smokestacks
  • Fugitive Sources: open areas exposed to wind action
  • Area sources: well defined areas within which there are several sources of air pollutants
  • Mobile Sources: move from place to place while emitting pollutants

Sources of SO2 (causes acid rain): fuel combustion

Sources of NOX (green house gas & acid rain): fuel combustion

Sources of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC): benzene, methylene chloride, released by industrial processes and transportation
